Ottoman beds are one of the most popular storage beds in the UK, but if you have never used one, you might wonder how they actually work. Here is a simple explanation.
The gas-lift mechanism
An ottoman bed uses a gas-lift (hydraulic) mechanism, the same kind of technology found in an office chair. Two gas pistons sit on either side of the base. When you lift the base using the handle at the foot or side of the bed, the pistons take the weight of the mattress and hold it safely in the air, so lifting takes very little effort. To close it, you simply guide the base back down, and the weight of the mattress helps it settle gently into place.
How much storage do you get?
Because the entire base lifts, you get storage across the whole footprint of the bed — far more than a bed with drawers. It is ideal for bulky items like spare duvets, pillows, suitcases and seasonal clothing, all hidden neatly out of sight without taking up any extra floor space.
Side-opening vs end-opening
Ottoman beds open in two ways. End-opening beds lift from the foot of the bed and are the most common. Side-opening beds lift from one side, which is ideal if the foot of your bed sits against a wall or the room is narrow. Choose whichever suits your room layout.
Is it safe and sturdy?
Yes. Quality gas pistons hold the base firmly in the raised position, and a sturdy handmade frame keeps everything stable. One thing to keep in mind: your mattress needs to be heavy enough to help the base close smoothly, and ideally no thicker than around 32cm so it does not press against the headboard when open.
