How to Measure Your Bedroom for a New Bed — UK Size Guide

Getting the size right is the most important step when buying a new bed. Too small and you will feel cramped. Too large and the room will feel cluttered. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your bedroom and choose the right UK bed size.

Standard UK Bed Sizes

UK bed sizes differ from European sizes, so it is important to use UK measurements when ordering. The standard UK bed sizes are as follows. A Single bed is 3ft wide (90cm x 190cm) and suits children, teenagers, or adults in smaller rooms. A Small Double is 4ft wide (120cm x 190cm) and is a popular choice for adults in smaller rooms who want more sleeping space than a single. A Standard Double is 4ft 6in wide (135cm x 190cm) and is the most popular size in UK bedrooms for couples. A King size is 5ft wide (150cm x 200cm) and is the recommended minimum for two adults who want comfortable sleep space. A Super King is 6ft wide (180cm x 200cm) and offers the most generous sleep space available in standard UK beds.

How to Measure Your Room

Before ordering, measure your bedroom in these three steps. First, measure the length and width of your room wall to wall. Second, note any obstacles — wardrobes, radiators, doorways, and windows that may limit where the bed can be positioned. Third, mark out the bed footprint on the floor using masking tape or newspaper to visualise how it will fit before ordering.

How Much Space Do You Need Around the Bed?

What About the Headboard Height?

For a Single bed, the minimum recommended room size is 7ft x 9ft. For a Double bed, it is 9ft x 9ft. For a King size, it is 10ft x 10ft. For a Super King, it is 12ft x 11ft. These are minimums — larger rooms will always feel more comfortable.
