UK bed sizes explained — and which Eagle Bed fits
Bed size is the first decision, and it's the one people most often get wrong. This guide lists every standard UK size we make, the mattress dimensions that go with it, how much floor space to leave around the bed, and which Eagle Bed ranges are available in that size. Mattress dimensions above are the standard UK sizes our frames are built to take. Frame footprints are slightly larger than the mattress because of the upholstered sides — allow a few centimetres either side when you measure.
Kids Single 2ft6
The smallest size we make, for children's bedrooms and box rooms. Our kids beds are made in 2ft6, and the Line Kids Velvet Bed is our best-selling children's frame — a clean panel line headboard on a child-safe slatted base, from £285.99.
Single 3ft
The standard UK single. Good for older children, guest rooms and box rooms. Available across our upholstered beds, ottoman beds and drawer storage beds — in a small room, storage under the bed is usually worth more than a taller headboard.
Small Double 4ft
120cm wide: noticeably more room than a single, and it fits bedrooms where a 4ft6 double would block a wardrobe door. A popular choice with our divan beds and side-lift ottoman bases, because the side-opening mechanism still works when the bed is pushed against a wall.
Standard Double 4ft6
The most common UK double and the size most of our orders are for. Every range we make comes in 4ft6 — panel beds, wingback beds, Chesterfield beds, ottoman and drawer storage. Leave at least 60cm of walking space on the sides you use.
King 5ft
150 x 200cm — wider and 10cm longer than a double, which matters if anyone in the bed is over six foot. Works best in rooms of about 3m x 3m and up. Storage matters more at this size, because a king bed takes up the floor space a chest of drawers would have used: see our gas lift ottoman beds for the largest underbed compartment we make.
Super King 6ft
Our largest size, 180 x 200cm, for master bedrooms. This is where a tall statement headboard earns its place — the Grand extra-tall panel bed and our wingback and Chesterfield designs are all made in 6ft.
How to measure before you order
- Measure the wall the bed will sit against, and the two walls either side.
- Allow 60–75cm of clear floor for walking and for opening drawers or wardrobes.
- For a drawer storage bed, allow roughly the drawer's own depth of clear floor at the side or foot.
- Measure the wall height above the mattress line if you're considering an extra-tall headboard.
- Check the route in: doorways, stair turns and landing width. Our beds arrive as headboard, base and rails rather than one solid piece.
