UK Bed Size Guide — Dimensions in cm and feet

UK bed sizes in centimetres, feet and inches

UK bed sizes are quoted in old imperial names (4ft6, 5ft) but sold in metric mattress dimensions. A UK Double is 135 x 190cm, a UK King is 150 x 200cm — and neither matches the American or European sizes of the same name, which is the single most common reason a mattress turns up and does not fit. Below is every size Eagle Bed makes, with the mattress dimensions and the floor space the bed actually needs.

Full UK bed size chart

Size name Imperial Mattress size (cm) Mattress size (inches) Who it suits
Kids Single 2ft6 75 x 190cm 30" x 75" Children moving out of a cot bed; narrow box rooms
Single 3ft 90 x 190cm 36" x 75" One sleeper, children's rooms, guest rooms
Small Double 4ft 120 x 190cm 48" x 75" One adult who wants more room, or couples in a small second bedroom
Standard Double 4ft6 135 x 190cm 54" x 75" The standard UK couple's bed
King 5ft 150 x 200cm 60" x 78" Couples wanting more width and 10cm extra length
Super King 6ft 180 x 200cm 72" x 78" Taller sleepers, couples who want maximum space, larger master bedrooms

These are UK standard mattress sizes. The outer dimensions of a bed frame are always larger than the mattress, because the frame, upholstery and side rails sit around it. Eagle Bed's exact external frame dimensions and headboard heights per model: DATA NOT AVAILABLE — REQUIRES VERIFICATION. How much floor space does the bed need?

  • Leave at least 60cm of walking space down at least one side of the bed. Two people sharing ideally want 60cm on both sides.
  • Measure the wall first, not the room. The wall the headboard sits against is the measurement that decides whether a 150cm King fits with space for bedside tables.
  • Check ceiling slopes, low windows and radiators before choosing a tall headboard such as a wingback or extra-tall panel bed.
  • Check the route in: doorways, stair turns and landing width. Measure the narrowest point.
  • Storage beds need clearance too. A drawer divan needs clear floor in front of the drawer side; a gas lift ottoman needs headroom above the bed so the platform can swing open.

Choosing between two sizes

If you are between a Small Double (120cm) and a Standard Double (135cm), the deciding factor is usually bedside furniture, not the bed — the 15cm you save is often what lets a bedside table fit. Between a Double (135 x 190cm) and a King (150 x 200cm), remember the King is also 10cm longer, which matters if anyone sleeping in it is over about 6ft tall. Bedding is sized to these standards too, so a Small Double needs Small Double bedding, not Double.

UK sizes are not US or EU sizes

A US King is 193 x 203cm, wider and longer than a UK King at 150 x 200cm. A US Queen is 152 x 203cm, close to a UK King in width but longer. European mattresses are commonly 200cm long and sold in 140cm, 160cm and 180cm widths. If you buy a frame abroad or online from a non-UK seller, UK mattresses and UK bedding may not fit it. Every Eagle Bed frame, base and mattress is built to UK standard sizes, so they fit each other and fit UK bedding.
